“The United States Postal Service has acknowledged that a copyrighted photograph of the St. Joseph, Michigan lighthouse, previously published in the Smithsonian magazine and the book ‘Wild Lake Michigan,’ by professional photographers and authors John Mahan and Ann Mahan of Gaylord, Michigan, played a significant role in the development of the Postal Service's stamp displaying the St. Joseph, Michigan lighthouse. The stamp is part of the ‘Great Lakes Lighthouses’ series of stamps, initially publicized in 1995.”
